A few tips for dealing with criticism constructively

A few tips for dealing with criticism constructivelyA few tips for dealing with criticism constructivelyWeve all been there. Youre seated across from your boss, co-founder, or mentor. Your stomach tightens as they tell you what about your work needs improvement, and why.Sometimes, it feels like youre being attacked, or that they view you as inadequate. For many of us, our first impulse is to tuck our tails between our legs, leave the room, and actively avoid these kinds of situations in the future. But this is a mistake.Receiving negative feedback can be nerve-racking, no doubt, but the way people respond to critical situations is often what separates the winners from the losers. For most of us, we tend to have two types of reactions to negative feedbackToo Stubborn. You become hintermannschaft and resistant, and as a result have difficulty internalizing the feedback to improve. This discourages honest feedback in the future, which can lead to stagnation.Too Open. You are so openly rece ptive to whatever sort of feedback you hear, that you try implementing all of it blindly. This confuses your ability to weigh or prioritize what feedback is worth taking, and what isnt. But neither of these means of responding to negative feedback works to your advantage. In order to become the best version of yourself possible, you must be able to listen to criticism with a level head, and distill which bits of it are most important (and which are probably bedrngnis). Theres no room for too much hard-headedness or too little backbone. For startup founders, you just really need to find the sweet spot between the two extremes. You just have to do it.Founders, especially, receive tons of advice - both critical and otherwise. If youre unreceptive to it, youll cling too long to failed ideas and bad habits. If youre too open to it, and try implementing every piece of criticism you receive, youll end up making changes that dont make sense or arent actually valuable. Its an important and sub tle skill - a kind of balancing act of awareness, honesty, and distillation - that all founders and people, in general, have to master.Heres how1. Weigh criticism based on its believability indexNot all feedback is created equal. One way to distill the unhelpful feedback from the useful is to consider who is giving it, how experienced they are in the world youre attempting to impact, and how believable they are.For example, a doctor who knows nothing about finance would not score high on your believability index if youre in the market for advice on stocks. (This is something Ray Dalio discusses in Principles.)Its also important to consider what a persons underlying motivations might be for giving you feedback. Those with more skin in the game will have an inherently higher believability score because you know theyre invested in your success.2. Learn to prioritize only whats actionableThere are certain changes or adjustments to your product or business that you just wont be able to make. The first step in determining which pieces of feedback to internalize and implement is identifying what is and isnt actionable.Maybe your product is built on top of something else (for example, a Facebook Instant game built on top of Messenger). If you receive feedback pertaining to the hard constraints of that more foundational component, its likely you wont have the resources to address it, as it would entail systemic changes. Most of the time, thats okay. Know you cant fix every problem, at least not all at once. After receiving feedback, hold prioritization meetings with your team to determine how many resources each adjustment might require. Weed out whats actionable and whats not, and prioritize what changes are most impactful to make right now.3. Dont play it too safe its okay to make wrong decisions as long as you learn from themWhen youre building or rolling out something new, remember that a big mistake many people make is allowing the mere possibility of receiving cr itical feedback to keep them from taking creative risks. That lowers the potential greatness of whatever youre building, as greatness is inextricably tied to risk.Taking risks - and making incorrect decisions as a result - is okay and manageable, as long as you learn from those mistakes and use them to improve your product in its next iteration. Its important that when taking risks you figure out a way to fail fast or speed up the iteration/feedback cycle. When experimenting, the number of shots on goal matters. In fact, this process of taking chances and fixing what doesnt ultimately work is a necessary component of building a great company. Its a matter of approaching the work scientifically.Throughout it all, realize that nothing you do will ever make everyone happy.Avatar, for example, is the top-grossing movie of all time - yet it boasts only an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 7.5/10 user score on MetaCritic.Game of War, which for a long time welches the 1 top-grossing iOS game o f all time, has over 20,000 one-star reviews on the App Store (thats almost 1 in 5 of its reviews). This is an important point to remember. Especially when your products are more creative, some amount of critical feedback is inevitable - no matter how successful your products end up being. Its impossible to please everyone. If you try, youll delight no one, and end up with something thats banal and average. At the end of the day, you have to recognize that receiving critical feedback is simply a part of building a company, and more generally, of doing difficult work. Those who end up succeeding in their industry dont do so because they somehow avoided ever making mistakes or producing projects that had flaws, nor did they build something that everyone loved off the bat. Rather, those who succeed possess an ability to separate useful, actionable feedback from the noise that doesnt ultimately matter. This article was originally published on Quora.

Impact of Unpaid Internships on Interns the Economy

Impact of Unpaid Internships on Interns the EconomyImpact of Unpaid Internships on Interns the EconomyUnpaid fr sichships have become more and more common since the recent economic recession. When evaluating, the growth of unpaid internships must be viewed in light of their effect on the intern and the overall economy. When looking to eradicate all unpaid internships, it could have a negligible effect on students even though the Department of Labors Guidelines were drafted to protect interns from exploitation by employers. On the other hand, a recent survey completed by The National Association of Colleges Employers survey found that the benefits of a paid internship far exceeded those of where the internships were unpaid. Some of the questions employers and students need to ask themselves are if the unpaid internship is legal and if they are violating any current labor laws? Is the work the student doing of benefit to them or does it focus more on helping the employer? What is th e impact of unpaid internships on the economy as a whole? There is also the inequality factor with unpaid internships since only students with financial means are able to do them because those students that are elend wealthy need to make money for the summer. According to The Department of Labor, the FLSAs six criteria must be applied when making a determination if an internship is required to be paid The internship, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment. The internship experience is for the benefit of the intern. The intern does notlage displace regular employeesbut works under close supervision of existing staff. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern and on occasion, its operations may actually be impeded. The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship. The employer and th e intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship. Unpaid Internship In the past, unpaid internships have become a common practice amongst companies. In order for an internship to be academic worthy, students doing internships in conjunction with their college coursework are expected to gain hands-on experience that helps them develop the knowledge and skills required to gain entry into their field but the New Guidelines could affect the quality of internships since one of the criteria states the employer derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern. The distinction that the New Guidelines are looking to enforce is that internships are for educational training rather than having interns do the work of regular employees. Many employers spend considerable time training and mentoring their interns and do not derive much benefit from having them complete an internship with the organization. While other organizations expect interns to jump right in and do the same work as a regular employee. An unfortunate result of strict adherence to the New Guidelines and in interpreting the issue of the legality of unpaid internships could make it more difficult for students to find internships in the future. The cracking down on the unpaid internship has recently come to light due to employers seeking free labor with no intent of hiring the intern in the future. One of the benefits of an internship is the training and establishment of a professional network with hopes of being hired for full-time employment once the internship is over. The misuse of interns by employers has brought the issue to a whole new level, including recent lawsuits that have cost employers millions of dollars. When Unpaid InternshipsAre Beneficial There are some instances where an unpaid internship still has its advantages, such as providing a student with experiences they could not get elsewhere, along with the opportunity to e stablish strong networking connections with professionals in the field. Excellent recommendation letters are another advantage that would help the student gain full-time employment with other organizations in the field. For nonprofit organizations unable to pay their interns its not an issue but for for-profit companies looking to save money, they could find themselves in the middle of a lawsuit that would cost them much more than if they had agreed to pay their interns. One things students should think about when considering an unpaid internship, is a recent survey completed by The National Association of Colleges Employers (NACE) where they showed that paid internships have a higher chance of leading to a paying job as compared to unpaid internships, since most of the interns who received job offers from the employer accepted the positions. Sixty percent held a paid internship compared to 37% of those who worked for an unpaid one. It was also stated that unpaid internships tend t o provide trainees fewer skills as opposed to paid internships. A survey taken by the Institute on Education and the Economy at Columbia Universitys Teachers College also found that paid internships provide a better experience for interns than unpaid ones. Of course, for some organizations they do not have the ability to pay. When this is the case, students must decide how valuable the experience will be to them and how much it will ultimately help them to achieve their future career goals.

Management Experience When Youre not a Manager

Management Experience When You're not a Manager Management Experience When You're not a Manager Manager. Five to ten years of experience required. Proven track record of effective management. It’s hard to land a management position when you don’t have the title “manager” on your resume or cant provide specific examples of your management experience. So what’s an aspiring manager to do without holding formal management positions? Plenty! If you are interested in becoming a manager, here are five ways to get management experience without being a manager: Lead a Project The skills required to be an effective project manager are very similar to the skills required to be an effective manager: planning, organizing, setting goals, managing budgets, leading people, and juggling multiple priorities. If you have never managed a project before, start by volunteering for project teams. It doesn’t have to be a huge project. Start small. Perhaps volunteering to be a part of the office Thanksgiving food basket drive. Hopefully, you’ll get to see what a good project manager does. Or, watch what an ineffective project manager does and  do the opposite. Then, once you’ve established yourself as a dependable team member, step up and volunteer to lead a project. Take a course in project management, read a good book on the topic, and interview successful project managers. You can even  get certified as a project manager, but that may be overkill unless you are planning to make a career out of project management. Train, Teach, Coach, and Mentor A big part of being an effective manager is developing your team. To do that, a manager needs to know how to onboard and train new employees, coach experienced employees, and eventually, mentor employees. Of course, to be considered for an opportunity to train new employees, it’s a given that you’d need to be very good at your job, or whatever it is that you’re teaching. Beyond being good at something, it’s important to learn and practice the skills of training, coaching, and mentoring. The best way to learn is by doing! Volunteer to develop a training program; volunteer to mentor underprivileged kids or coach a sports team. Learn the art of coaching â€"  learn to ask great questions. Hone Your Interviewing Skills Many organizations use selection committees, hiring teams, or will involve others when interviewing job candidates. Again, volunteer for these opportunities. Don’t just “wing it” when it’s your turn to interview a candidate. Develop a list of  great interview questions, practice active listening and asking probing follow-up questions, and learn how to establish rapport quickly. Being able to screen, interview, and select great employees is an essential management skill and can be learned and practiced! For more on how to interview, I’d highly recommend Alison Doyle’s  Job Search site  â€" it’s the best there is. Learn to Manage Conflict, Have a “Crucial Conversation,” and Give Feedback Yes, dealing with those sticky “people issues” is the most challenging part of a manager’s job. We all face challenging people issues â€" with our co-workers, family members, and friends. Life is “target rich” when it comes to opportunities to resolve a conflict. Learn to do it in a positive, constructive way. I’d recommend reading the book  Crucial Conversations  and look for opportunities to practice and get good at it. Being able to provide specific examples of when you were able to handle conflict, provide difficult feedback, or address a sensitive issue will demonstrate that you have the willingness and capability to handle the “people” aspect of a management position. And believe me, there are plenty of experienced managers that won’t or can’t deal with people issues, so it really will set you apart. Create and Manage a Budget As a manager, I would love it if one of my employees volunteered to create and manage a budget for me! While some managers enjoy  the number crunching aspect of management, it’s my least favorite part. If you’re good at Excel, you can learn to create and manage a budget. A good place to start is with your home budget. If you can’t convince your boss to let go of the budgeting responsibility, you can still do what you can do learn finance, budgeting, and accounting. Take a course, learn to do a cost-benefit analysis and ROI, and learn to speak like a bean-counter (A Finance and Accounting Glossary for the Non-Financial Manager.) There are a lot more skills you can learn to prepare for being a manager, including presentation skills, communication skills, leading change, and strategic thinking. It’s important to be able to talk about what you have  done, not what you  could do. The suggestions listed above will give you that practical management experience needed to help land your first management position.

Heres Why Your Branding Strategy Isnt Working

Heres Why Your Branding Strategy Isnt Working Heres Why Your Branding Strategy Isnt Working Branding is the image your company creates in the minds of customers. Many popular companies convey images that you probably know well, even if you dont use their products. The marketplace is littered with other offerings that have muddy brand images. They dont seem to stand for anything or anybody. If your product is in this category, there likely are reasons why. Branding looks easy until you try it. Major corporations spend millions making sure their message is just right. While few businesses have those resources, you can examine your product, your competitors, and your target audience. Whatever you do, be methodical in your approach and make sure youre satisfied with what you want to say before you ever present it publicly. Learn how to identify problems and address them appropriately. Missing Your Audience Branding that conflicts with the wants and needs of your target audience wont bring results. If you design and sell elegant wristwatches for business professionals and for formal occasions, a logo, slogan, or advertising campaign that emphasizes active lifestyles would be missing the mark. Ways that branding efforts miss the target often are more subtle than this, but the fundamental lesson is that the company, the customers it is seeking, and its branding all need to align. In the consumer food industry, Smuckers has a wholesome family image for its line of jelly, jam, and preserves. Branding comparable to that of companies that sell male-oriented energy drinks wouldnt work. Smuckers knows its product and its space in the market. The Wrong Look In all forms of media, the company logo and the overall look of advertisements are as important as the look of the product. Select fonts and colors carefully because those decisions communicate a lot about your brand. Media companies usually update their looks regularly, to be seen as fresh, high-tech and trendy. Theres a look to the USA Today newspaper thats much different from The New York Times. Neither paper could adopt the others look without causing a major disruption in what their readers expect to see. How often companies change their look can say a lot about their brand. Long-standing conservative brands have steady logos, changing rarely and only in small ways. Edgier products change more often to keep up with the times and trends. Take a page out of the book of Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. When these companies update their corporate look, it is subtle. All three companies have billions of dollars in resources to change their logos if they wanted, but their executives know that isnt the correct strategy. Consider the consequences if you undergo a dramatic overhaul. An Inconsistent Message Beyond your logo, your company probably has a tagline thats used to represent everything you stand for. Popular examples include Just Do It, Breakfast of Champions, and Finger-Lickin Good. These standard examples are effective largely because they accurately define Nike, Wheaties, and KFC. Taglines are short statements designed carefully to best define a companys image. They differ from slogans in the sense that slogans are less permanent and often tied to a single marketing campaign. Taglines are designed to last. However, if you have a tagline that doesnt fit your companys place in the market, its unlikely to be memorable no matter how catchy or clever it might be. For example, a classic rock radio station wont be successful with The Sounds of the 70s as its tagline if it also plays rock hits from the 60s and the 80s. If anything, a tagline so inconsistent with the actual product would most likely confuse customers and damage your brand identity. Impatience You may be tempted to change your logo or tagline regularly to stay fresh, but you risk not giving your audience enough time to digest what youre saying before you say something else. Your energy would be better spent on spreading the logo and tagline you already have instead of starting over. To have this patience, its important to understand the difference between branding and individual marketing campaigns. Branding is about overall image and consistent with a companys mission. Marketing campaigns often are designed to have a short-term impact, while branding defines companies for generations. Nike has multiple marketing campaigns every year, and they can be abandoned or expanded on short notice. The swoosh logo and the Just Do It tagline, however, were given time to take hold and have lasted for decades. Sometimes, dramatic change is hiding a bigger problem. A struggling company might view a rebranding as a quick fix when money and time would be better spent on market research, product development, or staff training. Lacks Excitement A lack of excitement might be the hardest problem to overcome. You want your branding to be creative and excite your audience, but youre probably scared to push the boundaries too far, especially since you dont want to totally throw out your logo or do anything to upset your current customers. By playing it too safe, you may not turn off anyone, but your branding could bring yawns rather than interest. A campaign that says, Were the One would probably have customers wondering about the one that does what? A vague statement that can be applied to anything wont resonate with customers because they wont connect it to anything specific. The food industry is full of classic branding strategies that work. Burger Kings Have It Your Way campaign from decades ago is simple, easy to remember and was put to music. It worked by highlighting a specific service that was different from other burger chains, which did not take special orders. Apply branding principles that give your target audience a reason to see how and why you are different from the competition.

5 Tips to Be Taken Seriously in Job Interviews

5 Tips to Be Taken Seriously in Job Interviews 5 Tips to Be Taken Seriously in Job Interviews Making a good impression and being taken seriously is the goal of any job seeker during an interview. But sometimes, that’s a lot easier said than done. Many hiring managers will make assumptions about you based not only on what you do, but also how you present  yourself. And as unfair as that might be, no one wants to be the odd duck  in the job candidate pond. We’ve tailored the tips in the Entrepreneur article, “8 Ways to Get People to Take You More Seriously,” to help you, gentle job seeker, find ways to finesse your pitch during a job interview and be more confident. So if you want to be taken seriously in job interviews, you should seriously consider these five tips! 5 Tips to Be Taken Seriously in Job Interviews 1. Stand straight. Remember your parents always telling you to stand up straight when you were a kid? Well, there was a reason for that. People with positive posture (i.e., no slouching, hunching, or stooping) are seen as powerful. And giving the impression that you are powerful scores you bonus points; not only will others perceive you as powerful (which is an attractive quality in job candidates), but you’ll start to feel powerful, too. 2. Tell a tale. In an effort to impress a potential boss, you might be tempted to whip out a ton of facts and figures to prove your point. Although having a solid knowledge base is important when it comes to job interviews, so is being personable. Studies show that people relate to personal stories more than straight-up data, so be sure to share a story while you are meeting with an employer. It will make you far more memorable and also give the person an idea of who you really are, and more importantly, what you can bring to the table as an employee. 3. Be prepared. We cannot say it enough. When you go into a job interview, you must be prepared. Arriving late, disheveled, or without a hard copy of your résumé and cover letter (yes, you might still need those!) are all signs of unpreparedness. And as unfair as it might be, a potential boss will view that as a sign of your work abilities, and judge you based on that. So be prepared to answer some tough questions during your job interview, and take every measure to be as prepared as possible. 4. Show interest in your interviewer- and the company. In the past, job interviews were black and white. An employer’s role was to ask questions, and it was your “job” to answer them. Those rules don’t really apply anymore. In today’s job market, job interviews are often  like conversations, and that’s why it’s imperative that you make sure to talk beyond just answering a question. Show interest in your interviewer (you can mention that you’re both from the same city or went to the same college) and, more importantly, show interest in the company you’re applying to work for. Ask questions about the company’s growth and how you’d like to be a part of that by bringing your skills and experience to the job. 5. Speak confidently. It’s a habit that some people have and might not even realize it. Called “upspeak,” it’s the way people will end their sentences sounding like a question and less like a statement. Thing is, if you’re making a strong statement (i.e., “With my 10-plus years as a marketing director, I know that I can solve your company’s problems?”) and end it sounding like a question, it can come off sounding like you’re insecure in your own abilities- even if you’re not. This can take some time to correct, so get in front of a mirror and practice eliminating upspeak from your speech patterns. You’ll thank us for it? No matter what industry you’re in, every job seeker wants to be taken seriously during a job interview. But you have to put in the effort first. Try some of these tips and you’ll be viewed as a serious job candidate- seriously. Readers, what do you do to make sure you’re taken seriously as a job candidate? Let us know in the comments below!

How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World

How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World How to Collaborate with Engineers All Over the World by Carol Milano At Carnegie Mellon, the fastest-growing student organization is its Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) chapter, according to Professor Kelvin Gregory, the faculty mentor. Founded in 2008 by Brad Hall, a senior mechanical engineering student, EWB offers young engineers an opportunity to interact with colleagues all over the world, and participate in projects that benefit developing communities in many nations. EWB-USA has hundreds of university and professional chapters. Each chapter partners with non-government organizations in a variety of locations that request assistance. Often, projects focus on a particular universitys expertise; for example, Midwestern colleges might address agricultural needs. Marisa Simmons (BS, 2013) joined MITs EWB chapter in her freshman year. Its first project, solar panels for a Ugandan health center, required both electrical and mechanical engineering. During the summer of 2009, MIT students did on-site interviews and surveys in Uganda. In 2010, Simmons was one of four MIT students (plus a faculty mentor) who teamed up with several Makerere University students for six weeks in Uganda. After installing solar panels, the students initiated water purification efforts, using information the research team gathered. In her teams second Uganda trip in 2013, Simmons notes that they continued rainwater harvesting, which is the most affordable way to get water in that region. We had built six harvesting tanks and will update those and build more. The structures are small and simple, made of mortar cement reinforced with wire mesh. Theres local access to those materials, but plastic would have to be trucked in. EWB projects are usually simple enough that students can do them. The point is that you do a design thats feasible for the community and [basic] enough for people with little experience and minimal equipment. Its much more than the equations and scientific principles you learn in school! We learned logistics and project organization. Its not just design of the project and model, its making sure you can get all the materials, said Simmons. She discovered that every culture has unique ways of doing things, including the construction process. It was good for us to find out from local students what kind of construction theyd do there, rather than just say, This is how we do it in America. In any project in a developing nation, things change all the time. We learned how to be flexible, and got actual practice in on-site problem-solving. Although the experience was tough and challenging at times, Simmons acknowledged that, the project was a very, rewarding experience. Global Opportunities The project areas for both Engineers Without Borders (EWB-USA) and Engineering for Change (E4C) are: Agriculture Civic Works Energy Information Systems Sanitation Structures Water Supply Prof. Gregory worked on an international project as an undergraduate at the University of Nebraska in 1995. Our technology is far more advanced than what is available in communities with EWB projects, he observed, Its important for students to provide technology that is appropriate from both engineering and cultural standpoints. You cant install 20-story windmills to supply power in a developing country because they couldnt fix it! Students assess, design, implement, and train. They make sure the communitys needs are being met before leaving, and that what they have done is sustainable. For each projects multiple trips, Carnegie Mellon students are accompanied by licensed professional engineers, who work with them on design and implementation. In 2011, EWB-USA, ASME and IEEE founded Engineering for Change (E4C). One of its 12 lead sponsors, the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) has had membership participation grow more than 75% since 2011. As reported by Alyse Stofer, President of SWE. Engineering for Change is a fantastic collaborative forum, combining humanitarian and engineering issues. Its a true multi-generational, multi-discipline, on-line community of engineers, social scientists, and innovative thinkers around the world. Youll see different areas of interest. Go where you have knowledge and passion, exclaimed Stofer. SWEs website also features a member participating in an E4C project. E4Cs Workspace section encourages members to share problems and brainstorm new ideas with an alliance of 500,000 member engineers and technologists in E4C. Membership is free. Any registered member can post challenges or questions. One recent request was for creating a mechanism allowing better airflow on Venezuelan public buses. (Postings are monitored by the E4C community at large.) You get to interact with all types of engineers and other professionals you wouldnt ordinarily work with, says Stofer, and think about how we can bring our insights and skills to humanitarian needs. Engineers want to give back. Thats what makes this a great collaboration.

Gabrielle Union on why women need to stop feeling lucky

Gabrielle Union on why women need to stop feeling 'lucky' Gabrielle Union on why women need to stop feeling 'lucky' Many people remember Gabrielle Union from her memorable roles in films like Bring It On, 10 Things I Hate About You and Think Like a Man as well as her TV series Being Mary Jane. However, in the last few years, the actress has moved past the entertainment box and can now check off being a full-fledged business owner with her haircare line, Flawless, which she launched in 2017.This is in addition to running her production company (she just signed a first look deal with  Sony Pictures TV) and writing a book that came out earlier this year. In addition to her career success, Union has also become known for not shying away from speaking out on everything from her struggles with fertility to the #MeToo movement in Hollywood to just helping other women find their own voice.Women have to stop feeling luckyAt the  SheKnows Media #BlogHer18 Creators Summit    Union spoke her truth again and reminded women, especially ones trying to launch a business, that they should never just feel grateful to be sitting in the right room or feeling lucky that someone believed in their company. She told the audience full of a diverse array of women that just “feeling lucky” will hurt them in the end.“A lot of us just want to be chosen whether that be by a certain group of friends, a romantic partner, or in business and a lot of times we just feel like we are lucky enough. If you have a great idea, there is going to be more than one suitor. Point blank and period,” she said. “Once you get down to the nitty-gritty of getting an investor you need to look at if that investor is problematic. If you are benefiting from the fruit of a poisonous tree take the extra time and do a background check. Find out how other relationships have worked. Find out how their relations were with women. If you can have offline conversations with people they will give you all the T you need.”It is OK to say noShe emphasized that women are conditioned from a young age to be unable to say no out of a fear of making any situation uncomfortable.“Make sure that you are partnering with people that are worthy and deserve it. Never feel lucky. They are lucky. They work for you. How many times have we seen women go under for being in close proximity to a problematic man?” she said. “But part of that comes with us feeling lucky. I got chosen. This person sees me. There has got to be more than one. It’s OK to be like, ‘Not you.’ It is ok to say no. It is absolutely OK. I know we are all conditioned to be agreeable and to not ask anything and be uncomfortable. You know what’s uncomfortable? Having your company blow up because of a problematic person.”As for how to get better at saying no Union told Ladders after her keynote: “I’m 45 and I’m still figuring it out. ‘I can’t believe that happened!, But I trusted you!, ‘I thought you believed me.’ But it was because I didn’t ask the next question. ‘Do you have a long-term plan for this business? Do you have m arketing dollars for beyond this point? Do you believe in the overall health and wellness of the brand?’“Did I feel lucky that someone responded to my dream and hopped at the first chance? Kind of like my first marriage. I wanted to be chosen. I wanted someone to see me or see my vision. It is this performance of perfection to feel worthy and seen by other people, but I was worthy from birth and I keep forgetting that,” Union told Ladders. “I felt lucky and went with the first person that noticed me. But somebody out there is going to be a right match, but it’s probably not going to be the first person and that’s OK. Don’t panic. Believe in yourself. Don’t sell yourself short and feel lucky, #grateful for the first person that pays attention to you! And that goes with everything.“In business, I keep learning that the hard way. I didn’t ask any follow-up questions and when your business hits bumps in the road why would you be surprised when I asked one question. T his is business. It has to go beyond do you get my dream. But who else gets the whole thing?”

What We Can Learn From Failure From Hillary Clinton-The Muse

What We Can Learn From Failure From Hillary Clinton-The Muse What We Can Learn From Failure From Hillary Clinton In her first interview since the election, Hillary Rodham Clinton inspired, wowed, and moved the audience gathered in a large auditorium at the Women in the World Summit 2017. And while I’d be hard-pressed to cite just one takeaway from her sage words, for the purpose of this article, I accept the challenge. Prior to the panel, interviewer Nicholas Kristof, a New York Times columnist, explained that he’d put a call out to Twitter: What should he ask Mrs. Clinton? Not surprisingly, what people most wanted to know was how she was doing. Presumably many of them had seen the photos of Clinton in the woods near her home, and they’d perhaps seen some activity from her Twitter feed, but they couldn’t truly know how she was faring after her defeat. She admitted that the loss was “devastating,” but responded, “I am doing pretty well all things considered… I just had to make up my mind that yes, I was going to get out of bed and yes, I was going to go for a lot of long walks in the woods and I was going to see my grandchildren a lot and spend time with my family and my friends who have rallied around me in an amazing way.”   The answer demonstrated a deep humanity and rawness, and hearing her candid acknowledgment of just how difficult it was in the days immediately following her defeat was nothing short of motivating. It’s the ultimate show of resilience, isn’t it? To fail and, no matter how hard it is, to pick yourself back up. To make the decision to get out of bed each day, even when staying in it and curling into a ball seems preferable. To keep going, even in the ugliest face of failure, and surround yourself with people who matter and activities and practices you value. We’ve written before about failure and how even the smartest people face it sometimes. We’ve heard stories about this successful leader or that accomplished CEO and their blunders along the path to achieving great things. And we know that there’s good advice about how to overcome it and push through, but to hear Clinton speak of her extraordinarily difficult experience put it all in perspective. Although she touched upon the self-reflection and analyzation that accompanied her post-election moves, the most inspiring and, I think, educational aspect of her story is the mere fact that, sometimes, dealing with it looks just how she describes: You acknowledge how painful the situation is, and you make a choice to move forward anyway. That’s what leads to healing- and ultimately growth. When you have a major career setback, or when you lose your job or learn that you’re not getting promoted, it’s OK to take time to process it. It’s OK not to act like everything’s fine and to admit, instead, that you’re intensely impacted. And it’s OK to face each day with a certain amount of “ugh,” so long as you get out of bed and turn to the little (a walk in the park) or large (quality time with family and friends) things to hold you up. After all, if Hillary Clinton can do it, so can we.
